Clean Fuel Regulations

Clean Fuel Standard

The Clean Fuel Regulations, also referred to as the Clean Fuel Standard will require operators (primary suppliers) in Canada to reduce the carbon intensity of gasoline and diesel they produce. The reduction target set by Canada is a reduction of 3.5 grams of CO2 equivalent per megajoule (gCO2e/MJ) in 2023.

Then another reduction of 14 gCO2e/MJ by 2030. The program will utilize a credit system for compliance monitoring. There are three categories of credits available to operators that produce gasoline and diesel:

  1. Undertaking projects that reduce the lifecycle carbon intensity of liquid fossil fuels (e.g., carbon capture and storage, on-site renewable electricity, co-processing);
  2. Supplying low carbon fuels (e.g., ethanol, biodiesel); and
  3. Supplying fuel or energy to advanced vehicle technology (e.g., electricity or hydrogen in vehicles).
